What is the difference between Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne, Eau de Parfum and Aftershave? Understanding the different type of notes which includes the base, heat and top to the type of scent. At Perfume Plus Direct we want to make sure you know exactly what type of fragrance you are buying.
Perfume These scents are usually between 15% to 40% fragrance oil, this means it’s the strongest type of scent. If your looking for something you love the try parfum to make it last longer. It is less than the other forms of fragrance and is often smooth and round in texture. It is usually more noticeable fragrance with the pure perfumes they tend seem thicker and denser to air. This is usually the most expensive type of scent you can buy.
Eau de Parfum An Eau de Parfum is usually between 10% to 20% fragrance oil and tends to last longer than an Eau de Toilette. This type of fragrance is what most fragrance brands create and is one of the most popular forms.
Eau de Toilette An Eau de Toilette is usually between 5% to 10% fragrance oil and tends to be most people’s choice for an everyday fragrance. It provides a light, fresh but usually doesn’t last the whole day. After approximately three hours of wear, around 80% of Eau de Toilette will have evaporated. You would think an Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum have the same ingredients but this isn’t always the case.
Eau de Cologne An Eau de Cologne usually has less than 5% fragrance oil and is perfect option if you want something light and only lasts a couple of hours. It tends to have more alcohol than any other type. It is formulated as a single burst and should be worn for a quick blast of scent. Don’t get confused and think Eau de Cologne is just for men, there is female versions too.
Aftershave An aftershave is traditional way for men to wear a fragrance. As they are applied to the skin. Aftershaves contain a lot less alcohol which limits their ability to last and therefore they weaken quickly. Rather than being used as a fragrance, Aftershaves should be used as a rejuvenating tonic
Different notes are needed to create a fragrance. They are blended together to create a harmony of scents that have their own separate purpose.
Top Notes Top notes are often described as an opening of a scent. This is typical the note you can smell immediately after applying a fragrance. It is generally the lightest of all notes so it tends to be the first one to fade. It’s the first impression of the fragrance that will either make you love it or instantly hate it. You may need the fragrance to mellow a bit for all the over notes to take the lead.
Heart Notes The heart notes or middle notes become more apparent once the top notes have dried down and fade as the fragrance develop. The heart notes are usually well rounded, a smooth combination that last longer than the top notes. It also has a stronger influence on the base notes that follow.
Base Notes Once all the top notes have fully evaporated you will begin to notice the base notes coming through the fragrance. The base notes intertwine with heart noes to create the true scent of the fragrance. This is often a richer note that will linger on the skin for longer.

Woody Woody fragrance is usually made up of a composition of warm, dry and sharp notes. These fragrances are usually on the notes if trees. It tends to be thought of as masculine scent however when particular woody notes are combined to make the perfect scents for women too.
Oriental Oriental fragrance is often known as a spicy scent that is bold and pleasing. Oriental scents usually have a distinctive bottle.
